Class Description

In this class, we will have an understanding of the basic techniques of the traditional line-free techniques of floral painting. We will be creating a composition and painting with a semi-expressionistic approach to depict the atmosphere of lotus in water. We will study various effects of water and Chinese watercolor pigments when interacting together with processed rice paper and how the free flowing paint can add a spontaneous beauty to plants with a vibrant quality through the use of shapes and value changes. I will reference works of masters, both art techniques and variety of expressing. I will start the learners on a composition, while guiding their technique, finishing it as a completed individual paintings Our main emphasis will be the understanding of a technique called the "boneless" painting in which we create with shapes and with very little use of outlines, which is a twist to the outline technique. The reason it is called "boneless" style is because blotches, patches are used without contour lines, thus giving it a loosely sketched quality with moderate control. Class will last for 2 to 2-1/2 hours. I combine talking and demo for 20 minutes and the learners will be spending about 1- 1/2 to 2 hours painting. Materials will be provided during the class.
